Wegens zijn activisme is kunstenaar Ai Weiwei drie maanden gevangen gehouden door de Chinese Staat. Hoe gaat hij om met het politieke schaakspel waarin hij is terechtgekomen en hoe transformeert hij zijn ervaringen naar zijn werk? Conceptueel en politiek geengageerd kunstenaar Ai Weiwei trad de afgelopen jaren steeds meer op de voorgrond als fel criticus van de Chinese overheid. Hij is onverschrokken en laat zich door niemand intimideren, tot hij in 2011 door de Chinese Staat wordt gegijzeld en bijna drie maanden wordt vastgehouden op een geheime plek. Als hij weer vrij is, beseft hij voor het eerst dat hij een prijs betaalt voor zijn activisme. Hij kampt met slaapproblemen en heeft last van geheugenverlies, maar laat zich desondanks niet monddood maken door de Chinese overheid. De film volgt Ai Weiwei na zijn terugkeer, in zijn dagelijks leven met zijn vrouw, zoontje en moeder. Maar ook in interviews met de internationale pers en de kunstwereld; ze willen allemaal zijn verhaal horen en verder vertellen. Hij heeft huisarrest, kan nergens heen en wordt streng in de gaten gehouden door de Chinese autoriteiten: 18 overheidscamera's staan gericht op zijn studio en zijn huis. Hoe moet Ai Weiwei omgaan met zijn gevangeniservaringen en het politieke schaakspel waar hij in terecht is gekomen? De rechtszaak die volgt noemt hij de Fake Case, naar analogie van zijn eigen bedrijf Fake ltd., maar nog meer vanwege de valse beschuldigingen aan zijn adres. Als reactie op de rechtszaak sturen gewone Chinezen hem spontaan geld met briefjes erbij waarop ze hem een hart onder de riem steken. Hierdoor is Ai Weiwei, ondanks alle tegenwerking, ervan overtuigd dat China klaar is voor verandering en krijgt hij weer nieuwe energie om door te gaan en de Chinese overheid te blijven provoceren. Hij wil vrij zijn en de Chinese bevolking een stem geven. Dus transformeert hij zijn ervaringen en frustraties naar een serie kunstwerken en blijft hij strijdbaar.
