Remembering Chen Shui-bian's First Jail Sentence (ca. 1986) & Prof. Elmer Fung
13092009As most have heard, former Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian has been sentenced to life in prison for corruption. An old online friend recently reminded me that this is not the first time Chen has been sentenced to jail. No, the first time was in 1986 when Chen's anti-KMT opposition magazine (《蓬 萊島週刊》) dared to accuse Elmer Fung Hu Hsiang (馮 滬祥)–then President Chiang Jing-guo's aide, long-time KMT party hack, and a National Central University professor–of plagiarizing his Ph.D. dissertation. The KMT-appointed court judges naturally ruled in Fung's favor after he claimed the dissertation was a translation, and not an outright plagiarism of an English book. As a result, Chen was sentenced to 8 months in jail for daring to criticize a Party favorite in print.
By 1986 Professor Elmer Fung already had a very sordid and disreputable past. Back in 1973, as a "professional student" (職業學生, i.e., as one of the KMT classroom stool pigeons sent to spy on classmates in those days), he was almost single-handedly responsible for instigating the "National Taiwan University Philosophy Department Event" (台 大哲學系事件). Because he received a "0″ on his Logic exam (6 out of 6 wrong), Fung went everywhere and complained to the media that "Patriotic students" (「愛國學生」) were being "persecuted" by professors, and even threatened his Logic professor with political ruin. As a result of the threats, the Logic professor relented and let him pass (even though his classmates also failed the course) and he received his MA in 1974. Subsequently, several professors who went to Tai-da's president to complain about the threats and bullying of faculty were fired from the department–one of them (王曉波) for writing an allegedly communist-sympathizing dissertation on pre-Qin Chinese philosophy!
By the time former President Chen Shui-bian went to jail for libel, in 1986, Fung was Dean of the College of Humanities and Literature at National Central University (國立中央大學). (Not bad for a kid who failed logic and threatened his way to a degree). In 2000, he felt competent enough to run for Vice President of the Republic of China, sharing theNew Party (中華新黨) ticket along with the political pundit and famous womanizer Li Ao(李敖). Over the next couple of years he proudly went on to do his "patriotic" duty by establishing ties with the Chinese Communist Party, and meeting with Jiang Ze-min and other high-ranking CCP members several times.
Alas, in 2004, Fung was publicly accused by an immigrant workers' organization of raping his Filipino house-maid and brought to trial. In 2005 he was found guilty of rape based on DNA evidence and sentenced to 4 years in prison. Due to judicial finagling (and influence-peddling, no doubt), however, Fung has managed to stay out of prison altogether. Today the convicted rapist, cheater, and professional whiner continues to teach Confucian Ethics and "applied philosophy" at National Central University, here in our merry little Cambridge of the Orient, Jhungli.
That is all.
